The 2 main problems with chimney stacks are the pointing and the flashing. If the pointing is sound, then it is likely the flashings have failed. Probably the most common issue with chimney stacks is eroded pointing. If the pointing is neglected it can cause more serious problems such as stack instability, water penetration and eventual disintegration. If left, damaged pointing can cause mould, damp, stains inside your property and eventual structural damage including cracks, fractures and deterioration.

The flaunching holds the chimney pots in place and directs rainwater away from the stack. Flaunching can deteriorate and crack over time. I can replace with grit and cement or a lime-based mortar, re-seat the pots. Once the stack is repointed and reflaunched, it will resist the elements and will perform as well as when it was originally built.
If you are not using your chimney ‘capping off’ the stack has 3 main benefits. Reduced heat loss leads to thermal efficiency and lower bills. It will prevent rainwater collecting inside the stack and causing damp issues in your chimney breast walls. Finally, it will stop birds nesting or dying in the stack.
Chimney pots serve a number of purposes and are essential for the functionality of a chimney. Occasionally they will crack or deteriorate.
